I film myself performing spoken word in English, the video is muted with subtitles in Malay. The incompleteness of this piece is highlighted through the lack of communication between the art and its audience. The video is layered with bright and colorful lights which makes it hard to understand unless you read my lips. Language is a device to communicate but if that communication is cut off by outside forces then it becomes an unfinished device, this piece was a way for me to illustrate how as a bilingual individual I am mostly in between both these languages and I’m never good enough to have either as my native language.
